In its processed metallic form, Beryllium is one of the lightest and stiffest naturally occurring materials known to science; unfortunately it is also highly brittle, making unalloyed beryllium unsuitable for most industrial processes. However, beryllium was discovered to be highly effective at absorbing neutron radiation, and it has since become a key component in the construction of modern reactors and engines.
